Brittney Newcomer, MS, NCSP, is the associate director of thought leadership at Understood, bringing to this role more than a decade of experience in education and a passion for working with students, teachers, and parents of individuals who learn and think differently.
Prior to joining the Understood team, Newcomer worked at California’s Summit Public Schools as the curriculum manager for special education. She spent nine years at YES Prep Public Schools, most recently as a licensed specialist in school psychology, providing evaluations for students experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties.
Newcomer also coached and provided trainings to teachers and school leaders on how to best serve students with a variety of strengths and needs in the classroom. She taught in inclusion and special education settings at KIPP Austin College Prep in Austin, Texas, and at P.S. 190 in Brooklyn, New York. She was a 2005 Teach for America corps member.
Newcomer received her BA in teaching from Texas A&M University, her MA in special education at Pace University, and her specialist degree in school psychology from the University of Houston–Clear Lake. She lives in Houston with her husband, Eric, who is a school leader, and their two children.
